Did you know that the average student in the United States applies to at least seven colleges? With thousands of institutions to choose from, pinpointing the perfect fit can feel like finding a needle in a haystack. But what if I told you there’s a way to make it easier?

My Story:

I was recently right where you might be right now, facing a mountain of over 20 college applications. From local New York CUNYs and SUNYs to the big-name Ivy Leagues, each application was a step in learning more about who I am and what I am truly passionate about. For instance, I realized that I had a strong interest in Computer Science and Business while filling out the Extracurriculars Section of the Common App and that one of the most important values for an ideal college for me was a strong and vibrant community.

The Money Talk:

Let’s be real: college is expensive. When I was applying, I had to think hard about the price tag. The average tuition and fees at private ranked colleges have climbed by about 4% over the last year, reaching $42,162 for the 2023-2024 academic year. For public schools, tuition and fees rose 2% for in-state students and about 1.4% for out-of-state students. It’s not just about tuition either; it’s about whether it’s possible to chase your dreams without being weighed down by debt.

  • Understanding Financial Fit:

Financial fit is about more than just the sticker price of tuition—it’s about the long-term value of the education you’re receiving. The Lumina Foundation suggests that a college is affordable if its expenses can be covered by saving 10% of disposable income over ten years and working part-time while in school. It’s essential to consider not only the cost of attendance but also the potential return on your investment (ROI).

  • Scholarships and Aid:

Scholarships, grants, and fellowships can significantly reduce the cost of college. It’s important to research and apply for financial aid early. If you are a low-income student, the QuestBridge National College Match should definitely be considered. Colleges such as Columbia, MIT, Harvard, and other top universities that are partnered with Questbridge offer full four-year scholarships. If you are interested in CUNY schools, the Macaulay Honors program is a must for high-achieving students, as it offers a full scholarship along with a host of other benefits for CUNY students.

Beyond the Bucks:

Although money is likely to be one of the greatest factors that determines what college you choose to attend, there are so many other important aspects to consider when deciding what college is right for you.

  • Campus size and atmosphere:

Does size matter when it comes to college? Absolutely! The size of a college can dramatically shape your experience. A larger college might offer more course options and activities, while a smaller college could provide a more close-knit community and personalized attention.

  • Location and Lifestyle:

Your college’s location doesn’t just influence the type of weather you will have to endure, but also your internships, job opportunities, and social life. A more urban location, such as NYC, may provide more networking and career opportunities.

  • Culture and Community:

What makes a college feel like home? It’s the culture. Look for a place where you can see yourself thriving, whether that’s in a competitive academic environment or a college known for its activism or artistic scene.

Choosing the right college is a journey that involves introspection, research, and a clear understanding of your personal and financial goals. Make sure to apply to a wide range of universities, become financially savvy, and look beyond the price tag when considering what the ideal college is for you.
